STRING II (2002 - 2004)
Strategic partnership in the South Western Baltic Sea Transregional Area Implementing New Geography

In the second phase from 2002 till the spring of 2004 the development concept of STRING I was implemented in a first practical step with six subprojects and six topic forums:

STRING II was supported by the EU with 1.,05 Mio. Euro from the INTERREG IIIB Baltic Sea Area Programme. The total budget of this project was 2,1 Mio. Euro.

Planners' Forum  
The planner's forum did carry out exchange of information and experience between the actors from all the involved regions concerning spatial planning, district planning, economic development, settlement structures and environmental matters.

Transport Forum  
The traffic planner did handle the exchange of information and experience between actors from the involved regions in relation to traffic planning, development of the public planning of environmental and transport structure.

Metropolitan Forum  
The exchange of information and experience between the actors from Copenhagen/Malmö and Hamburg and the outskirts in relation to economic development, city planning as well as social and environmental matters have been carried out by a forum made up of actors from the metropolitan areas.

Business Development Forum
The exchange of information and experience between the economic actors from the involved regions in relation to the media, the health sector, food industry, tourism and transport logistics, regional development and business development measures as well as industrial planning was the responsibility of this forum. Moreover common network and co-operation opportunities have been discussed.

Cultural Forum  
The forum of the members of the different cultural administrations did carry through the exchange of information and experience between the cultural actors from all the involved regions in relation to exhibitions and cultural initiatives. They established closer co-operation between the cultural institutions and a network for cultural administration.

STRING TV Co-operation Pilot Project
This pilot project consisting of TV actors from the entire STRING area prepared a concept for co-operation between regional television stations (the NDR Kiel, TV Øst Vordingborg, the Television Malmö in Sweden) and produced a common pilot transmission.

Medium Cities Portal
 
The general aim of the forum was to establish a sustainable network of cities in the more rural regions of the STRING-area through an exchange of ideas and knowledge between relevant actors from our medium sized cities.

Management
With this project environmental-friendly and sustainable tourism in the coastal areas has been secured: Experience has been collected, exchanged and discussed in order to further the sustainable development of the coastal zone and the water.

HOST - Highlighting the Natural and Cultural Heritage of STRING/HOST
With its attractive metropolitan areas, landscapes and history, the STRING area is rich in culture. The regional culture and nature together with the exchange of experience of the actors should lead to new ways of obtaining a sustainable tourist industry. The results were published on an inter-active homepage and in several languages on the Internet as well as through other media.

SME Business@STRING
romotion of E-business for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises in the Southwestern Baltic Sea Transregional Area.
The establishment of a transregional co-operation structure means an encouragement to the SMEs and the business development companies to further exploit the E-Business technology. This meant new possibilities for small and medium-sized companies to open up new markets.

Online-based Training in Vocational and Further Training
The objective of the project was to create a transregional co-operation combining the Internet-based education and training, and serving as exchange of know-how in the STRING region. The project partners came from different fields of the educational and training sector with specific thematic interests and specialities. The inputs reached from establishing an Internet portal including the offer of an information database, to the offer and development of Internet-based education and courses with the particular purpose of servicing the SMEs.

STRING Viking Network  
This project did build a transregional co-operation for the exchange of the processing, creation and marketing concepts of the cultural heritage of the southwestern Baltic area Vikings. The attractive cultural heritage and measures had to be integrated into a marketing concept for sustainable tourism in connection with Viking museums and Viking centres (Haithabu, Tissø, Uppåkra).

STRING Design Project  
Traditionally, design and handicraft have been highly represented in the STRING area. To further young innovative design, the project was to be an Internet-based platform of trans-regional co-operation, presentation and marketing. Apart from co-operation with the institutions of tertiary education, the project included training in marketing strategies as well as the development of a network with many ramifications of supporting establishments.

After 2004 the project was continued by the organisation BDT- Baltic Design Transfer.
