Conference

"BUILDING NEW BRIDGES
IN THE SOUTH WESTERN BALTIC SEA REGION"

2 and 3 June 2009 in Lübeck, Germany

The international conference "Building New Bridges in the South Western Baltic Sea Region" on 3 June in Lübeck was attended by more than 300 participants coming from Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Germany. Invitation was done by the five regions of the STRING co-operation together with the Fehmarnbelt Business Council (FBBC) and the Fehmarnbelt Committee (FBC). The conference discussed the coming prospects opened by building the fixed link over the Fehmarnbelt. These development perspectives will lead to an economical, scientific and cultural "meta region" on an axis between Hamburg, Lübeck and Copenhagen/ Malmö, generating and attracting new enterprises and thus new job opportunities.

Central item of the agenda was the  "Lübeck Declaration", which was adopted by the STRING regions and was supported by FBBC and FBC. By this declaration a close co-operation was agreed upon in seven key fields:

1.  Developing an integrated traffic system for the cross border region

2.  Creating a World leading Knowledge Region

3.  Supporting joint tourist marketing activities within the STRING region

4.  Creating a common labour market and a STRING labour market network

5.  Bringing the STRING region at the top of Europe in climate protection and sustainable growth

6.  Creating a Cultural Bridge across the Fehmarnbelt

7.  Intensifying co-operation and cross-border information exchange#
